What is life coaching?
The type of life coaching I provide is individually focused, socially aware, and spiritually informed encouragement, motivation, guidance, and loving accountability within a structured and practical setting. My coaching is about listening to you, understanding your specific goals and situation, and working with you to identify the necessary actions and tools that will help you achieve your aims and improve your life.
Could I benefit from life coaching?
Maybe. The probability that life coaching will work for you is highly dependent on three factors. First, you should have a relatively clear idea coming in of what your goal(s) are. Don’t worry, you don’t need to have all the answers or details about your goal(s), but it should be clear to you the general change you are seeking to make. Second, making sure you are ready to do the self-work that is necessary to achieve your goal(s). Working with a coach is just that, work, and you need to be prepared to put in the effort. Lastly, doing your best to choose a coach that is a good fit with your personality and has the necessary expertise to guide and support you.
What makes for a successful coaching client?
There are many factors that can go into whether a client has a successful coaching experience, but there are two essential elements that will always be necessary: vulnerability and courage. In the course of being coached, it is critical that you be willing to reveal and be your whole self—fears and anxieties along with hopes and dreams—and engage fully the process and forego the need or desire to be “perfect.” Courage, which I define as the willingness to be constructively uncomfortable, provides the momentum and capacity to address and move through tough truths and establish new thought patterns and behaviors.
What is the difference between coaching and therapy?
Therapy is the best and most appropriate place to address clinical challenges such as depression, anxiety, mood disorders, and processing past trauma that is having a significant and debilitating effect in the present. Coaching is the best and most appropriate place to conduct structured and guided personal growth around issues that are not current or emerging crises in your life. It is true that you might find many of the activities and tools we do use in coaching to be therapeutic, but I want to be clear: coaching is not and should not be used as an alternative to therapy.
Do I need coaching or therapy?
You don’t have to choose between one or the other. You can be in therapy and work with a life coach at the same time. In deciding what you need, the key is being honest with yourself about what your most pressing needs are and if they should or need to be addressed in a clinical setting.
What makes you different from other life coaches?
Because coaching, in general, draws heavily from psychology and since we live in a society that emphasizes the individual over the social and collective, many coaches often focus on the individual client’s psychology to the exclusion of addressing and acknowledging social factors in helping a client achieve the wellbeing they desire. My training as a sociologist and my commitment to practicing anti-racist, queer feminism makes me uniquely capable and prepared to work with clients to address the psychological, emotional, and social elements that either impede or promote their healing and wellbeing.
Do I need to be religious or spiritual to be a client?
The short answer is no. However, it is true that a significant amount of my coaching is influenced and informed by several spiritual traditions—ranging from Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, Traditional African Religions, Judaism, and others. I do not require or need a client to practice or hold particular religious or spiritual beliefs, but I find that I am best situated to help those clients who are open to the idea of spirituality.
I’ve read what’s on your website, and I’m still not sure if you are the coach for me; what should I do?
First, it’s okay if you don’t know. Choosing a life coach is a big decision. If you are unsure, the best thing to do is simply schedule a free 30-minute conversation where you will be able to tell me a little about what you are looking for and ask me any questions you need to make the most informed and helpful decision for yourself. The most important thing is that you are confident in whatever decision you make.
Do I have to pay for all my coaching sessions upfront?
No, you do not have to pay for all your coaching sessions upfront. All you are required to initially do is decide how many sessions you would like to commit to (which determines what your per session cost is) and pay for the first session.
Do you have a payment plan?
Yes, I do offer payment plans. I work with each client to set up a payment schedule that works with your budget while compensating me for my labor as your coach.
I don’t think I can afford life coaching; do you have any suggestions?
If you are concerned with your ability to afford my coaching services as they are priced on the website, please don’t let that automatically discourage you. Please contact me and let’s schedule a conversation. I personally believe that life coaching should be made available to as many people as possible, and I work hard to meet people with where they are at financially. Reach out and give me a chance to see if there is a price and payment option that works with your individual situation. In the near future, I hope to offer scholarships to clients who face the greatest economic barriers to accessing coaching.
Do you provide other services besides individual coaching?
Yes, besides individual coaching I also provide virtual and in-person workshops, trainings, and seminars on a variety of topics—ranging from emotional health, spiritual development, and major life transitions to social justice and equity, group dynamics across difference, and personal growth for social change. Additionally, I provide a variety of organizational services, ranging from workshops and trainings to consulting and providing coaching as an employee benefit. If interested, please message me to discuss what your individual or group needs are and to receive a quote for the service you desire.
